September 27 & October 4

10 AM - 6 PM

Class Size Max: 8

This hands-on, two-day workshop with Andreas Laszlo Konrath introduces participants to the fundamentals of lighting for film photography, emphasizing the photographic portrait. Held over two consecutive Sundays, the workshop allows students to explore ambient and strobe lighting techniques through large and medium-format cameras. The first Sunday focuses on a full day of image-making, where participants photograph each other using different lighting scenarios and set-ups. In the morning, the workshop begins with large-format photography, and the in afternoon, students will transition to shooting medium-format. The second Sunday is dedicated to reviewing and discussing the images captured the previous week, allowing participants to analyze their work and gain valuable feedback together in a group setting. By the end of the workshop, those taking part will have hands-on experience with essential lighting techniques and a deeper understanding of how to achieve dynamic, professional-quality images on film.

While this workshop is a technical exploration, students will also consider what it means to make a portrait, focusing on the importance of building trust and forming reciprocal relationships in the process. This discussion will highlight the sensitivity required for creating images about others, prioritizing empathy and collaboration rather than extraction.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own large or medium format cameras for use during the workshop, but some will be provided. Tuition includes two rolls of 120 and ten sheets of 4x5 film per participant.

Tuition includes a $125 material fee

If your desired tuition option is unavailable, please email info@penumbrafoundation.org and we will do our best to accommodate you. If the entire class is sold out, we can add you to the waitlist.
