Class Size Max: 6
Learn about the cyanotype process in this hands-on workshop! The cyanotype, invented in 1842 by English chemist and astronomer Sir John Herschel, and used by the photographic pioneer Anna Atkins, produces distinctive Prussian blue images. During this two-day workshop, participants will learn how to mix and apply chemistry to paper and other materials and print unique cyanotypes using inkjet negatives and a UV exposure unit.
This class is designed for participants who are new to the process or those who have some experience and would like to explore more in-depth. Attendees will be introduced to a range of different papers using a "cyanotype paper library" provided by the instructor, as well as other materials such as fabric. They will learn different approaches to coating and exposing materials along with ways of refining digital negatives to work with the process in a detail-oriented way that goes beyond the basics. Using these methods, they will create a series of final prints of their choosing. Participants will also be introduced to a brief history of the medium and work of contemporary artists using cyanotype in unique ways.
Tuition includes a $70 materials fee
