What Makes a Photobook Sustainable? US EDition
Published & Printed by Penumbra
What Makes a Photobook Sustainable? celebrates three years of research and conversations by the Sustainable Photobook Publishing (SPP) network. The book is a compendium of forty case studies along with roundtable discussions, essays, quotes and prompts, that collectively seek to demystify the publishing process — illuminating how books are made and illustrating why knowing, and asking questions, plays a fundamental part in making better, more strategic choices for both people and the planet.
SEcurity Matter (C) - A Portrait of Surveillance
by Daniela Spector, 2024 Risograph AIR
Security Matter (C) - A Portrait of Surveillance is a photographic book that draws directly from the nearly 400 pages of Spector’s grandmother’s FBI file. Her grandmother, Norma Spector, was surveilled between 1949 and 1978 for her involvement in the Communist Party, Federation of Greek Maritime Unions, Women Strike for Peace, Brooklyn Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, and the National Negro Congress. The “C” in “Security Matter C” stood for “communist.”
Era invierno cuando removimos la tierra
by Maite Mérida, 2024 Risograph AIR
Combining 35mm film, pinhole photographs, and written and archival material, Era invierno cuando removimos la tierra / it was winter when we removed the soil reflects on the legacy of extractivism & massified monoculture in Chile through the story of Mérida’s father, who, while working in the forestry industry, fostered her deep regard for the environment. In an editorial gesture, the final book is composed in a shape that resembles a pile of paper—the main product of the industry that the project calls into question.
ClichÈ Verre - unique silver gelatin prints
by Daniel Hojnacki, 2022 Workspace Air
“The 19th century printing process of cliché verre uses the fine soot released from an oil lamp flame to coat a piece of glass. This becomes my “negative”, I draw upon the volatile, delicate surface with my body, and the natural world. Creating records, momentary acts of suspension, a vessel for keeping time. They are a proof of life, a rendering of a brief passage of my body, the wind, rain, and breath. I then wipe the glass clean of it’s residue, its memory, and repeat the action again.”
