Course Overview
If you've been avoiding applications because you feel confused, overwhelmed, or frustrated by the writing requirements, this class is designed for you! Through presentations, in-class exercises, discussions, and guided personal research, participants will create a portfolio that includes an artist statement, résumé, bio, project description, and proposal. Students will leave with writing strategies and techniques for crafting clear and creatively written texts for future applications.
Topics will include:
Researching residency, fellowship, and small grant opportunities,
Brainstorming and beating writer’s block,
Writing artist résumés and artist bios,
Writing artist statements and project descriptions,
Writing project proposals.

Liz Sales is an artist, writer, and educator based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is the founder of I Write Artist Statements—a writing service for artists’ statements, résumés, project proposals, press releases, and whatever else an artist might need to make their practice viable. She has been a faculty member at the International Center of Photography, the City University of New York, and the University of Connecticut. She writes for Mercuria Magazine, LensCulture, and Foam Magazine. A minimum of three students is required for all courses to run. In most cases, our registration deadline is 24 hrs prior to the start time of a workshop/class.
