10 AM - 4 PM
Class Size Max: 6
In this one day workshop, participants will create phytograms—cameraless images on film—using plant-based developers. By placing plant materials in direct contact with film and processing them with homemade solutions, participants will achieve beautiful, unexpected, and often vibrant results similar to lumen prints.
Due to their transparency, phytograms offer a range of creative possibilities, from hand-coloring and gold leafing to light box presentation, reprinting, or film splicing for video works. The process draws on phenols naturally found in plants, activated by a washing soda/vitamin C solution and enhanced by sunlight or UV light. Other plant compounds introduce subtle color variations, with results varying by film type.
The workshop will cover every step of the process, including preparing the developer, exposing, fixing, and washing, giving participants a solid foundation to continue making phytograms in their own practice.
Tuition includes a $20 materials fee.
If your desired tuition option is unavailable, please email info@penumbrafoundation.org and we will do our best to accommodate you. If the entire class is sold out, we can add you to the waitlist.
