FALL 2024
Guest Juror | Hernease davis
Selected Members: Chia Yun Wu, Katherine Sidelsky, Lieh Sugai
As a medium, photography is composed of a myriad of chemistries that can be beautifully realized physically, digitally, abstractly, psychically. By “beautifully”, I mean to emphasize the mysterious connection between an affectionate process and how that sentiment moves through the life of the resulting image. How we, as viewers, encounter this life is not a prescriptive or predictable experience.
Lieh Sugai, Chia Yun Wu and Katherine Sidelsky are affectionately using the photographic substrate’s ability to absorb chaos and to carry on sculpting environments where they can contend with the complex reality of displacement, longing and connection.
I am drawn to artists who wield the flexibility of photography to render nearly impossible things. Each of these three artists skillfully grapples with very distinct life experiences. Their respective practices and bodies of work are inspiring examples of how photography can traverse dimensions of times, states, and histories.
