Spend the day exploring the art and technique of architectural photography in New York City!
This hands-on workshop is designed for photographers who want to photograph buildings with clarity, intention, and precision. The day begins with a focused introduction to essential tools and techniques, including lens selection and use, camera setup, and understanding and controlling perspective. Then, the group will head out into the city to put these ideas into practice, working with some of New York’s most iconic architecture. Moving between outdoor and indoor spaces, participants will have the opportunity to photograph both large-scale city architecture and more controlled interior environments. In the field, participants will focus on perspective and keeping vertical lines true, framing buildings within dense urban environments, strategies for approaching both exteriors and interiors, building strong compositions using light, shadow, and repetition, and working thoughtfully and efficiently on location. Along the way, there will be demonstrations, guided exercises, and time for individual shooting with feedback.
This workshop emphasizes learning to slow down, analyze space, and make deliberate photographic decisions, while building technical skills.
Penumbra will provide 2 camera setups with tilt-shift lenses for the group to share and experiment with. Participants should come prepared with their own cameras to use for the remainder of the session.
*Please note that if the weather does not permit, this workshop will take place on Saturday, September 12.
