Invented by Alphonse-Louis Poitevin in 1855 and further developed and modified for general application by Joseph Wilson Swan in 1864, Carbon printing is a photographic process that uses a pigmented gelatin layer, also known as a tissue. When the sensitized tissue is exposed to light, the gelatin hardens in proportion to the exposure. The unhardened gelatin is then washed away, leaving a relief image that can be transferred to a final surface.
Join photogravure artist and master printer Miguel Counahan for a demonstration of this labor-intensive process. The event will begin with a presentation on the history of carbon printing and its contemporary applications, followed by a live demonstration of each step of the process, from making the gelatin from scratch to producing the final print. Miguel will also discuss how the gelatin prepared for carbon printing can be used in the photogravure process.
Light refreshments will be provided.
