November 12 & 19

5PM - 8PM

Class Size Max: 6

Requirements: Previous experience printing cyanotype is required.

This two-session course provides students with the opportunity to practice toning their cyanotypes in a classroom setting. The first session begins with a brief review of the coating, processing, bleaching, and toning steps, led by the instructor. The remainder of the course is dedicated to hands-on practice and experimentation using three toners: coffee, green tea, and black tea, and two types of bleach: ammonia and sodium carbonate. Toning is best suited for prints that are at least a few days old, so participants are encouraged to bring in cyanotype prints made independently or from previous classes. Print size is limited to 8x10.

$30 materials fee included in tuition.

If your desired tuition option is unavailable, please email info@penumbrafoundation.org and we will do our best to accommodate you. If the entire class is sold out, we can add you to the waitlist.

Jarrett Esaw is a photographer based in New York City, currently attending Hunter College for Studio Art. Interested in natural light, Jarrett explores New York in search of compositions and situations that stand out in different lighting. His work encompasses a variety of genres, with a focus on street photography. The print is an integral aspect of his practice. Whether it be silver gelatin, albumen, platinum, or inkjet his images are not fully realized until they are on paper.
