Cliché verre is a hybrid printing process developed in the 19th century that combines hand drawn elements of painting and drawing with the light sensitive medium of photography. The French term derives from early printing terminology and loosely translates to “glass plate.” In this weekend workshop, students will learn to create unique silver gelatin photographs and lumen prints from drawings, rubbings or by transferring pre-existing photographs onto transparent surfaces with opaque materials such as smoke soot, ink and paint. Students will create contact prints and photograms using the historical cliché verre process. This workshop will offer students a unique visual vocabulary using expressive luminous tones, atmospheric layering, and exciting mark-making to create a final work of art. Students at any level of photographic knowledge will have the chance to explore this exciting technique.
