Tuesday
June 2
5PM - 8PM
Join artist Witho Worms for a carbon printing demonstration in conjunction with the exhibition Turm und Taxis.
Carbon printing is a photographic process that uses a pigmented gelatin layer. When the sensitized tissue is exposed to light, the gelatin hardens in proportion to the exposure. The unhardened gelatin is then washed away, leaving a relief image that can be transferred to a final surface.
The artist will share methodologies and formulas for each step of the process, before giving a live printing demonstration using pre-sensitized tissue and paper negatives. Attendees will be invited to participate, working together and seeing results in real time.
This event focuses on the carbon print as the final piece, expanding on Miguel Counahan’s demonstration in April, which presented the process as a step in photogravure printing.
Turm und Taxis will be on view in Penumbra’s Exhibition Space from May 28 - July 31, 2026

Witho Worms lives and works in Amsterdam. His work explores the entanglement of culture and nature, drawing on his background in Cultural Anthropology. Through landscape photography, he examines how human concepts, language, and infrastructures shape the environments we inhabit — and how these environments, in turn, shape us. His recent projects focus on energy landscapes and large-scale industrial structures as markers of a shifting reality.
