Developed in the 19th century by Sir John Herschel, the anthotype process captures images using the photosensitive qualities of plants. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore several techniques for creating photographic images with plant material. Appropriate transparencies will be generated, followed by creating emulsions for anthotype printing. Participants will then learn how to make their own plant- based developers, which they will use in combination with the lumen process as well as camera-less images on film called phytograms. Using produce from the grocery store or bodega, weeds plucked from the sidewalk, or luscious blooms brought in from your garden, this workshop is an opportunity to engage with the natural world within the city and make images using the sun.

Tuition includes a $50 materials fee.

ANNE EDER is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose area of concentration is combining historic and experimental processes. She is a lecturer in the Lewis Center for the Arts, Princeton University, and an instructor at Harvard University. She has been internationally exhibited and published and is a sought-after speaker and panelist on subjects such as ecofriendly processes, darkroom sustainability, and experimental photography. She lives near Boston with her fabulous chihuahua, The Brain.
