Ortho Litho film is a specialist film originally intended for graphic arts and lithographic applications. It is extremely low speed and high contrast, making it traditionally difficult to use for representational picture-taking purposes. However, with adjustments made to the development process, it is possible to achieve tonally rich, unique images on film. The film is insensitive to red light, so it can be processed by sight in the darkroom, making it an easy entry to shooting large format film, as well as inexpensive compared to other large format films. This class is accessible to beginners or those more experienced with large format. For those who enjoy making tintypes, this process may be a nice companioning process, as it shares in being orthochromatic and is slower speed which enables longer exposures in daylight. In this workshop participants will take a photo walk with 4x5 cameras and process the images together after— learn to load film in the field, meter, expose, develop and make a high-res digital file from orthochromatic film.

Em White (b. 1990, Bremo Bluff, VA) is an American photographer and visual artist, specializing in historic photographic processes and large format work. She draws on her background in sociology and her rural upbringing to examine how the self is informed by environment and the means in which beauty can exist beyond the superficial, as a device for disruption. White explores the sensory joy within the mundane and how that joy changes when it is shared. She lives and works in Richmond, VA with her two dogs, Sadie and Gus. She runs a portrait studio where she collaborates with members of the community to produce tangible works in a digital era. She teaches at Virginia Commonwealth University and various community art organizations. Her work has been exhibited in various group shows and her debut solo exhibition High Water was held at Candela Gallery in 2021.
