Learn to control continuous lighting in this practical, one-day workshop! This hands-on workshop covers the basics of working with both daylight and artificial lighting, including daylight-balanced and tungsten-balanced sources. Through guided instruction, participants will learn to evaluate the quality and direction of light, use a light meter effectively, and compare the effects of various light-shaping tools. Using a single-light setup, participants will observe how different light-shaping accessories alter the light’s appearance, gaining valuable skills to shape and control light effectively on their own. The workshop also includes portrait sessions with models, allowing participants to experiment with various lighting setups and build proficiency in creating professional-quality images.

Option to combine this workshop with Flash Essentials for a comprehensive lighting workshop experience.

If your desired tuition option is unavailable, please email info@penumbrafoundation.org and we will do our best to accommodate you. If the entire class is sold out, we can add you to the waitlist.

ANDREW FRENCHs work is inspired by the signature look of his daylight studio in Union Square. He shoots editorial and commercial work for clients including Food & Wine, Esquire, Town & Country, House & Garden and O, The Oprah Magazine. Before he began his career as a photographer, Andrew worked as an assistant to over 70 photographers for nine years. He traveled the world learning from some of the masters of photography including Mary Ellen Mark, Annie Leibovitz, John Dominis, Art Kane and Ruth Orkin, among others. He helped these legendary photographers create their images from building sets to designing light on location and in studios, and along the way he soaked up their approaches to making pictures. Learning from the masters shaped Andrew’s approach to his own photography and is the basis of the knowledge he shares with his students.
