Conducted by Mike Robinson, a modern master of the medium, this workshop covers the techniques perfected by commercial daguerreotypists in the 1850s. Participants will learn modern and traditional techniques of polishing using silver clad copper plates and will produce two mercury-developed, quarter plate gilded daguerreotypes. Also covered will be advanced concepts of contrast control with bromine accelerated plates, and chemical handling, and alternative fuming techniques. Plates will be housed in handmade passe-partout style enclosures.

All processing equipment, cameras and materials including two plates, all chemicals and solutions, and housing materials will be provided. Limited to six, this three-day workshop is for anyone interested in making the very finest modern daguerreotype imagery. No experience necessary.

MIKE ROBINSON is an artist-practioner, teacher, conservator, and historian of the daguerreotype. He has researched and written on the studio practice of Southworth and Hawes forthe Young America catalogue and for the Daguerreian Society annual. Mike taught graduate and undergraduate courses in 19th Centery Photographic Processes at Ryerson University in Toronto earned his PhD in History of Photography from DeMontfort University in Leicester, UK in 2017.  His dissertation is titled, The Techniques and Material Aesthetics of the Daguerreotype.
