From Phone to Wall: Instagram in Print (for teens*)

During this six-session online course, students aged 14 - 18 will explore creating photo-narrative projects using phone cameras, creating negatives and prints at home, and digitizing their work to exhibit on an online platform. Class time will be spent exploring photographic practices by various artists, in-class and at-home shoots, engaging in class critiques, learning analog techniques, lighting demonstrations, engaging in a guest artist visit, and exploring text and image. The course will culminate in a final presentation for family and friends.


REMOTE LEARNING REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A computer or tablet device for virtual sessions

  • High-speed Internet connection for downloading/viewing/sharing media

  • An up-to-date browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari)

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A smartphone

  • Paper, B&W laser printer or photocopier.

  • Sun print paper or cyanotype kit (details after registrations).

  • Printmaking paper (details after registrations)


JAIME SCHLESINGER is a freelance photographer and photography educator.  She is a faculty member and museum educator with the International Center of Photography in New York City.  Jaime graduated with honors from NYU Tisch School of the Arts Photography and Imaging department.  She has worked as an educator for 16 years and developed curricula and programming with the Japan Society, the Museum of Chinese in America, the Museum of Biblical Arts, the Hoboken Historical Museum and Rhinelander Center’s Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children, amongst others.  Alongside pursuing her passion for the arts and youth development, Jaime is a certified Ayurvedic Nutritionist.  Her photographic work focuses on portraiture, family, identity and documentary themes.  She currently lives in New Jersey with her husband and son.

ANDREW FRENCH has photographed editorial and commercial work for clients including Food & Wine, Esquire, Town & Country, House & Garden and O, The Oprah Magazine. Before he began his career as a photographer, he worked as an assistant to over 70 photographers, including Mary Ellen Mark, Annie Leibovitz, John Dominis, Art Kane and Ruth Orkin, among others. Learning from the masters shaped Andrew’s approach to his own photography and is the basis of the knowledge he shares with his students. Andrew has a degree in Education and has been on the faculty at the International Center of Photography and New York University for nearly two decades. He’s inspired by his daylight studio in Union Square and loves going on adventures around NYC with his wife, son and dog Nelson.


*Please note students will not be in front of the screen for more than an hour at a time.  We will have scheduled screen breaks and assignments during and after the course hours.
