All of the editions sold directly benefit Penumbra Foundation’s Workspace Program, Risograph Residency, Artist Lecture Series, the year-long Photobook Program, Youth programs and Scholarship, the Project Gallery and our newly opened Exhibition Space, which allow us to truly be a vital presence and voice in Photography, in New York and beyond.
Empire – Andrew Moore
Limited edition portfolio
Empire is a special edition portfolio by photographer Andrew Moore of photographs made over the winter of 1995–96 in the defunct theaters along 42nd Street in New York City. The work bridges both a particular time in New York’s cultural and architectural history– between the old glamour of a city that no longer existed and the as-of-yet-to-come transformation of the aughts, as well as shift in the artist’s practice from experimental darkroom work to “straight” photography.
“A theatre is not unlike a photograph. They both frame a scene. And they both leave so much hidden, out of sight. Within these photographs, made after all the final curtain drops and rolling of end credits, the 42nd Street theaters perform their grand finale.” –Andrew Moore

Aaron Turner – Photogravure
This limited edition photogravaure was produced on the occasion of Aaron Turner’s solo exhibition, Black Alchemy: Resolve (attempt #1) in the Penumbra Exhibition Space July 6th – September 30th, 2023.
In the pursuit of abstraction to create speculative narratives, Turner uses various photographic techniques and processes, including reflective and archival materials, and in-camera and darkroom manipulation. The exhibition combined works from multiple series within and outside of Turner’s series Black Alchemy, forming a non-representational response to and visual analysis of objective and subjective ideas in photography as it relates to the individual lived experience of everyday life and internal contemplations.

Scene In A Library – Mary Ellen Bartley
Last copy available
In 2019, Bartley spent six weeks at Penumbra making hundreds of prints, using a toner-based copier machine. All images were forged using the Taubman collection of 19th and early 20th century photographic manuals, treatises, and monographs, housed at the Foundation’s location in New York City.
In her image-making process, Mary Ellen Bartley playfully explored the possibilities that the surface of these historical objects offer, both visually and tactilely. The result, Scene in a Library, is a limited edition artist book containing 28 images in six leporello signatures, a fold out and a photogravure, presented in a foil stamped slipcase.
“Here, in your hands” writes art historian Kim Beil in her text, “is a book of books, an index, a codex. […] The photographs that last longest are the ones that are hidden from the light of day. They are pasted in albums or bound in books, like secrets. A photograph of a book is a question, whispered with exquisite patience.”
