Course Overview
This vibrant and playful online class turns our focus towards the joy of discovery. It is a crash course in creativity, asking students to push themselves to make, to break unproductive habits in their practices, try something new and find inspiration. Inspired by a story in Art & Fear, by David Bayes and Ted Orland, in which a photography teacher divides his class into two groups, ‘quantity’ and ‘quality’, asking his students to deliver either 100 new images or one perfect image. The anecdote reveals that the act of making produces the best results, whereas a search for perfection can be debilitating. Taking cues from this prompt students will be encouraged to make 100 new images in one month, with the caveat that no one is keeping score. The aim is to find a handful of quality images, from high-quantity production.
This five-week workshop will begin with the introduction of your current practice, which will act as a benchmark for what we discover about our work and working habits in the subsequent four weeks. Students will be given prompts and complimentary assignments at the end of each weekly meeting, to challenge and excite their 25-image weekly goals. Our sessions will be structured around group critique, writing exercises, the study of established and emerging photographers, and a deep dive into different photographic approaches. This workshop is ideal for photographers of any ability, or discipline, who are interested in pushing the boundaries of their practice and experimenting with new ways to build their portfolios. At the heart of this workshop is the concept of play, students should expect to leave these five weeks refreshed and ready to launch into something new.
