Saturday & Sunday

July 6 & 7

10 AM - 6 PM

Class Size Max: 6

In this weekend workshop, students will learn one of the earliest photographic processes, wet-plate collodion. This process enables one to make images start to finish completely by hand— students will learn to prep plates, mix chemistry, properly expose and process images. While many instructors emphasize the technical potential of this process, White's approach values experimentation and physical interventions in the creation of an image.

This workshop embraces many ideas of what constitutes a successful image, whether it be a clean plate or one that exploits the chemical characteristics of the process, the emphasis is on giving participants the tools to make work that reflects their individual vision and artistic style. Students will not only learn a new way to make photographs, but hopefully gain an expanded perspective on how process can intersect with and support their own work.

Tuition includes a $50 materials fee

If your desired tuition option is unavailable, please email info@penumbrafoundation.org and we will do our best to accommodate you. If the entire class is sold out, we can add you to the waitlist.

Em White (b. 1990, Bremo Bluff, VA) is an American photographer and visual artist, specializing in historic photographic processes and large format work. She draws on her background in sociology and her rural upbringing to examine how the self is informed by environment and the means in which beauty can exist beyond the superficial, as a device for disruption. White explores the sensory joy within the mundane and how that joy changes when it is shared. She lives and works in Richmond, VA with her two dogs, Sadie and Gus. She runs a portrait studio where she collaborates with members of the community to produce tangible works in a digital era. She teaches at Virginia Commonwealth University and various community art organizations. Her work has been exhibited in various group shows and her debut solo exhibition High Water was held at Candela Gallery in 2021.
