youth scholarship program

Mission Statement

The Youth Scholarship Program began in January of 2021 as a means to offer workshops and classes, both online and in person, to underserved New York City students looking to develop themselves as professional photographers and storytellers. Students selected for this program are provided with the necessary resources and guidance to help them hone their artistic practice, broaden their vocabulary, tell their stories, and be heard.

This program is distinguished by its focus on historic photographic processes, like wet collodion, cyanotype, lumen printing, and platinum printing and by its ability to offer students a nurturing community of photographic professionals and working artists that is unavailable in traditional educational settings. For young students, photography provides a powerful conduit for finding their voice, but the ability to powerfully tell a story through photographic images must be learned, developed, and perfected.

Fundraiser

Since the launch of the Youth Scholarship Program, Penumbra has welcomed over a dozen students to participate in photography workshops at no cost to them.

Please consider making a donation so that we can provide the necessary tools and guidance to help students hone their artistic practice, broaden their vocabulary, tell their stories, and be heard. No amount is too small.

All gifts are tax-deductable and directly support the Youth Scholarship Program.

City-As School

City-As-School (CAS) is the nation’s leading external learning or experiential learning model for high school students. CAS emphasizes freedom, trust and responsibility. It’s a place where students learn by doing; doing in their internships, doing in their class work, and doing on their own as they prepare their portfolios for graduation.

High School of Art & Design

The mission of the High School of Art & Design is to inspire, educate, and fully prepare students to become exceptional artists. Through a unified curriculum that incorporates a broad spectrum of disciplines integrating art, technology and academics, students are prepared to go on to college and careers with industry-standard mastery in the major of their choice. With a commitment to promoting strong ethical values and professional demeanor, HSAD strives to foster a sense of community among their students, staff and parents.  They are dedicated to engendering students' productive, creative and innovative participation in the world of visual arts as concerned and caring citizens of the global community.
