Invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1839, salt printing was the first negative to positive printing out technique. It can produce soft, luminous, and romantic prints that are sepia colored, giving them a particularly atmospheric look. Though the process is often mistaken as fussy or overly-precious, it is neither. Salt prints are made of remarkably inexpensive materials compared to most photographic techniques.
In this hands-on workshop, students will learn fundamental techniques for producing salt prints. Working with negatives from cell phone pictures, high resolution digital images, strongly contrasty film negatives or even ink drawings on mylar, students will walk away with a working knowledge of the process and the confidence to continue working on their own. This class highlights how to avoid common beginner mistakes, and covers techniques including different sizings, sensitizing and toning on a variety of papers for different effects.
Students of all levels are welcome.
$75 materials fee included in tuition
