Fall 2021
Guest Juror | Catherine Edelman

Selected Members: Bridget Conn, Debora francis, judyta Grudzien

Portfolio reviews can often be daunting, likened to speed dating. Most in-person reviews last 20 minutes, and within that time, the artist shows the work, explains the concept, and listens to feedback. I’ve been reviewing portfolios for decades, and the one thing I look for is clarity of vision... and honesty. I rarely read an artist statement unless I am truly captivated by the work. Online exhibitions are different than portfolio reviews because the artist does not have the ability to speak and explain the work. But ultimately, the results are the same; the juror responds or doesn’t. But unlike in-person reviews where photographic presentations can get “out of order,” the sequencing of images is vital when presenting work online. Given these parameters, the three artists I chose create work that is strong, presented with clarity and purpose. Congrats to all three, and thank you for sharing your photography. ― Catherine Edelman

About the Juror:

December 1, 2021, marks the 34-year anniversary of Catherine Edelman Gallery, a venue for contemporary fine art photography in Chicago. Since its founding in 1987, the gallery has established itself as one of the leading galleries in the US devoted to the exhibition of prominent living photographers, alongside new & young talent. The gallery showcases a broad range of subject matter, attracting both the seasoned collector and first-time buyers. In May of 2019, CEG moved to a 4500 sq ft space, expanding its program to include artists readings and panel discussions, with a larger exhibition space and dedicated video room, seeking to expand the vocabulary of photography. CEG’s website provides a wealth of information, including artist talks, interviews with art world professionals, and extensive educational material. To date, CEG has hosted 247 public exhibitions, featuring more than 200 artists.

In 2018, Catherine co-founded CASE Art Fund, with her dear friend Anette Skuggedal, who runs Lumina Gallery (Olso, Norway), harnessing what they knew best – the power of photography – to call attention to the need for children’s human rights. Over the last three years, CASE has produced five photographic exhibitions and has partnered with 19 photographers and more than 25 organizations. More info can be found at www.caseartfund.org
