Since the 19th Century, the platinum process has offered richness of photographic tone and archival permanence unsurpassed by any other photographic medium. It has been the premier choice for many of the worlds greatest photographers, and remains so today.

In this course, participants will learn the traditional platinum process using a coherent, unified approach based on contact printing from original in-camera large format negatives. Participants will follow the entire process from subject selection to creation of their own prints.

Working as a group, we’ll make a series of photographs on large format film, choosing subjects well-suited to the Pt/Pd medium, using exposure and development tailored to the process. Next we’ll learn the procedures to hand-coat platinum/palladium solutions on fine paper, prepare the coated sheet for printing, and expose it with intense UV light, in contact with a negative, to make the final print. By the end of the first day participants will all have personally produced one or two platinum contact prints from our brand new 5x7-inch negatives. The second day everyone will practice making prints while we explore some of the variations and tonal controls for the hand-coated Pt/Pd print. Students will finish the weekend with a basic understanding and experience of the process, ready to improve their skills through practice on their own or in later workshops.
