Applicants are required to fulfill a six-day volunteering program before becoming a Class/Workshop Teaching Assistant, in at least one of Penumbra Foundation's areas: Office (and Darkroom); Tintype Studio; and Special and Outside Events. Shifts are typically 4-8 hours (depending on the activity).
Assignments vary and will require beginner or advanced knowledge of photography. Volunteers will be placed accordingly.
After finishing the Program, each Volunteer becomes a Member and will be allowed to use Penumbra's darkroom at no charge for the amount of hours they have volunteered (i.e. Someone who has volunteered 24 hours has 24 hours of access to the Lab —during Open Lab Hours*). With their Individual Membership, volunteers enjoy discounts and free activities (please read the details below). Volunteers can exchange their hours for up to 50% discounts on workshops.

* Note: Open Lab Hours will change every semester according to Workshops schedule and Penumbra's needs (Critique, Artist in residence and other Programs).
