Students will take a comprehensive approach to the collodion process and its effective practice by the modern-day photographer. Its practitioners effectively make their own film through the coating of a metal plate with the collodion substrate, sensitizing it in a solution of silver nitrate, and exposing this plate in-camera while still wet.  Hence its commonly known name “wet plate”.

This seven week course is designed for students who want to learn the techniques behind the wet plate collodion process, as well as those who strive to develop a body of work in this unique process.  The wet plate process is most commonly known in its three forms – tintypes (positives on tin), ambrotypes (positives on glass), and glass negatives (negatives on glass).

Students will learn how to hand coat their own plates, create and expose images, developing, fixing and varnishing. Students also learn proper handling, safety, and mixing of chemistry for the process, how to build their own darkroom and modify a camera, and how to print pre-existing imagery on to plates using an enlarger.

Class critiques will be held to learn how to talk about your work while materials including cameras, enlargers, chemicals, glass and metal will be supplied.
